Breed History

A shipwreck in 1807 led to the discovery of some Newfoundland which was interbred with other dogs and water spaniels to produce the Chesapeake. They are known to frequent the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

They were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1933 and soon after they were known widely as gundogs. They have subsequently been kept as pets as they are incredibly affectionate and loyal.

Temperament

The Chesapeake is a loyal and affectionate dog with a soft spot for children. They are very intelligent and can be very comfortable as family pets.

They could be very protective but since they mature late, this will be more visible when they are about 18 months old. They really do not like being left alone and can develop some bad habits if that happens. They are very suitable and active companions.

Environment

The Chesapeake is one dog breed that loves water. You may not be able to keep them away, especially if you’re giving them a walk or running with them. They love outdoor life and are definitely not suited for indoor or apartment living.

They are best for the country where the owner has a large expanse of a garden so they can run freely. They are also for homes where one person always stays home. They cannot be left alone. They definitely need a lot of activities for them to lead a healthy life and are therefore not suitable for firsttime dog owners.

Exercise

A Chesapeake needs about 2 hours of exercise daily because they are pretty energetic dogs. They love to be outdoors. You could do 2 walks in a day so they are kept active. You may need to let them roam and run around the yard just so they are happy.

The yard should be secured through. Chesapeake excels at canine sports of any kind. They are vibrant and intelligent dogs so they would need mental stimulation as well. If they get bored, they develop bad habits so you should keep them occupied mentally and physically.

Grooming

The Chesapeake’s coat isn’t so difficult to groom. They are light shedders so it’s easy to keep them brushed and clean. Their coat is somewhat waterresistant so when they play or swim, all the water and oils just fall off their coats and this means they do not get cold.

It is important to brush their coat twice weekly as this should keep them looking good. You should also clean their ears to avoid a buildup of wax and ear infections. It is much better to prevent an ear infection than to cure it.
