This duet for soprano and bass comes from Bach's most popular and most played cantata 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme' recorded here for All of Bach with Jos van Veldhoven. This cantata revolves around the biblical story of the foolish and the wise bridesmaids: the latter miss the wedding feast because they did not have oil ready for their lamps when the bridegroom arrived. This duet is a love duet between the anima (soul) and her bridegroom (Christ), with texts from the Song of Songs, the wedding book of the Old Testament.
