Avatar: The Last Airbender just passed its 19th anniversary and we also just got a Netflix liveaction adaption so its a great time to be an ATLA fan! I wrote this song for Azula because I love ATLA and given the complexity of her character I really wanted to write a song that captured her inner thoughts and feelings. I’m so glad that she’s been given a larger role and has gotten more screen time in the liveaction adaptation of season 1 since she only started becoming relevant in season 2 of the original animated series! Getting more insight into her relationships with her father Fire Lord Ozai and her friends Mai and Ty Lee was definitely needed!

I liked the development she had in her Spirit Temple comic but I’m also happy that she didn’t get redeemed by some spiritual awakening in a comic book. Azula’s redemption arc will be a challenging one that will take her way longer than her brother’s did and Zuko’s arc lasted about 3 seasons! I’d love to see a fully animated arc for her if possible and I really hope we get to see Azula as an Adult, along with Aang and the rest of his crew, in the 2025 animated Avatar movie. I personally don’t ever want Azula to have a 180 change into being a good guy as I see her becoming more of an antihero in the future who perhaps joins the Avatar team and is nice to people…. sometimes hahaha!

I worked with Jazmine on this animatic and it was such a great experience! She took on all the details I wrote up for this Azula song and brought my vision to life! Jazmine made a lot of clever choices with Azula’s positioning and the camera angles/movements throughout the song so a cookie goes to whoever can understand and interpret the meaning behind her brilliant choices for the visuals!
