The first Williams team was founded in 1966 under the name "Frank Williams Racing Cars Ltd". At this time, Frank Williams prepared and entered Brabham chassis in Formula 3 and Formula 2. Then, from 1969, Williams entered cars in Formula 1: a Brabham BT26A in 1969, a De Tomaso 505 in 1970, two March in 1971 and 1972 as well as a Politoys FX3 in 1972.

In 1993, Alain Prost replaced Mansell and test driver Damon Hill replaced Patrese. If, in the hands of Prost and Hill, the new FW15C flies through the qualifying exercise (15 pole positions including 13 for Prost) even setting a record of 24 consecutive pole positions, the start of the season proves more delicate than in 1992 and Prost, promised to clearly dominate, is battling with his rival Ayrton Senna while Williams is struggling to assert itself against McLaren. However, from the Canadian Grand Prix onwards, Williams won seven victories, including the first three for Damon Hill. Prost wins his fourth and final world title and WilliamsRenault retains the constructors' title.
