Too many waves? Is such a thing even possible?

Not many Australians would have suggested it a couple of months ago, while the nation was slugging through midsummer, and even in SW WA, where summer was good, nobody was surfed out. But here we are in early autumn, and surf exhaustion is a real issue — especially along the points from Byron north, where an almost never ending stream of swells have been doing their best to wear out shoulders, legs and surfboards.

Talking with Soli Bailey about the Kirra sessions you can see in this clip, he confirmed the toomanywaves syndrome. “I think it’s definitely possible,” Soli admitted. “I fully noticed myself during the end of this swell, just almost shutting down. I’ve been pretty much burning the candle at both ends, surfing every day, just making the most of how much swell we’ve had.”

But how do you not gorge yourself at the feast? If there’s ever a time for too many waves, it’s autumn in Australia. “As a kid growing up you remember those early morning brisk offshores, beautiful clean ocean,” says Soli. “it’s a really magical time.”
