Attract More Hummingbirds by Providing Perches

Attract more hummingbirds and bring them closer to you feeders by providing perches for them! Hummingbirds like keeping an eye on their food. If you give them a front row seat, you will see your hummingbirds more and you will be less likely to have a bully sit in a spot where he can dominate ALL of your feeders.

Most people only see hummingbirds feeding at flowers or a feeder, but hummingbirds spend the majority of their time perched. They are not always easy to spot, but a hummingbird will find a favorite place on a branch in a bush or a tree and will sit in that same spot most of the time.

And there the birds will preen, watch for insects (their main food source), and keep an eye on the feeder or favorite flowers so they can swoop down and protect it from other hummingbirds.

If you want to bring your hummingbirds down to a spot where you can watch them, provide perches for them. I have lots of dead tree limbs tied to the railings between my feeders and the birds perch on them all the time. I also hang little swings from Pop’s Birding Company between the feeders and the birds love to sit on them.

A big advantage of providing perches close to the feeders is that a bird will be less likely to find a perch spot high in one of your trees where he can keep an eye on and dominate all of your feeders. Get that bird close to one feeder, and it is likely he will now ignore the rest!
