Everyone considers FRIENDSHIP a good thing, but because modern Western society is so individualistic, we don't want to admit that we also NEED friends in order to be happy. Premodern cultures had a different way of thinking about friendship: for them, friendship was a NECESSITY. One of the most sophisticated articulations of the ancient view of friendship comes from Aristotle who, in his ethical writings, turned friendship into a science.
