0:00 Are Eggs Bad For Kidney Disease Patients?
First off, we don't like to demonize any ONE food as a general rule. Nutritional claims of the eggtreme benefits or harms of a food are usually not founded in strong science.
And you all know by now that we advocate strongly for the power of a plantbased diet for CKD and kidney health. Eggs are a little of both worlds we love egg whites because they are one of the very few animal proteins that are alkaline. However, egg yolks are metabolized into a uremic acid (which is hard on gut and kidneys).

1:59 Interesting things about Eggs
Eggs are interesting because they are definitely not a plantbased food. They are animal food and they tend to have a couple different properties to them which can make them both really helpful but also have some negative pieces as well.

2:39 Why Include Eggs In Diet?
On one side eggs are a great complete source of protein. The egg white is actually very alkaline. Egg yolk isn’t but the egg white is. Which is one of our goals we want to have alkaline foods in the diet.

3:19 Are Eggs for Everyone?
Eggs as an animal protein, they do convert or metabolize into the uremic toxin TMAO. Uremic toxins are the things that can harm your kidneys, so we are trying to eliminate as many sources of uremic toxins as possible which is why for a lot of people we are going to focus on a 100% plantbased diet.

4:38 Dietitian Conference on Plantbased Diets (Story)
Story of a dietitian who was suffering from kidney disease. She added eggs to her 100% plantbased diet and her GFR went down.

6:30 Summary – Are Eggs Bad for Kidneys
We recommend that ALL patients start with plantbased diet, recognizing that some CKD patients can later add back in egg whites without any drop in GFR. When lowering protein in your diet, remember that eggs are in a lot of baked goods! Search for vegan egg substitutes and try some of them out. We've got 2 great recipes coming your way this week: our Vegan Scramble and Banana Bread recipes show you how to incorporate egg substitutes into your plantfocused diet.

If you have egg questions, don't be afraid to address them with your dietitian. That's why we're here and we are eggceptional at our job! We love working with individuals to find the nutritional strategy that works specifically for YOU no eggageration!
Ok that's enough egg puns!
