Update: with the new regulation change in 2024, you can get the german citizenship in 3 years. They changed it from 8 or 6 years to 5 to 3 years in 2024

Prerequisites for applying:
Living six to eight years in Germany without interruption: this will change to three years starting from the first half of 2024
Blue card or residence permit in Germany
Not being in your probation period at work

How long does it take?
From application to confirmation it took me app 6 months (fast) it can take up to multiple years

How much does it cost?
255 € for the citizenship document
90 € for a new passport & ID
30 € for giving up my other citizenship

Steps in the process:

1. Phone Call with a government official
2. Sending out the application: 1 kg of paper documents
3. Letters: confirmation of the arrival of your documents, then after a few months naturalization assurance or Einbürgerungszusicherung in German.
Following steps depend on the country you are from and they can be skipped depending on your other citizenship(s).
4. Giving up my other citizenship: going to the embassy to get the confirmation letter prepared.
5. Permission certificate from my home country: Erlaubnisurkunde. Getting this from the embassy and sending it to the German office
6. Getting the citizenship document "certification of naturalization" or in German "Einbürgerungsurkunde". Information comes via post again. You need to go there and pick it up personally and they take your blue card or residence permit away. So, apply for ID and passport right away! It takes a while to find an empty slot. Getting German ID and passport that can take a few weeks. If you pick the urgent option, the passport comes quickly within like 5 days to a week
7. Giving up the other citizenship within 4 months
