Few sauropods can boast the same claim to fame as Apatosaurus. With a colossal, dramatic form perfect for the centerpieces of exhibitions on dinosaurs in museums across the United States of America, this is the quintessential long necked dinosaur. First named in 1877, this giant was one of the several iconic sauropod species that towered over the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation, in what is now the American states of Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico. At the time Apatosaurus lived, these areas of the world were very different places; fluctuating from arid and humid with the seasons in a forested savannah like environment, void of flowers, grasses and many of the trees you and I would be familiar with today. Some of the most famous dinosaurs known to science coexisted with Apatosaurus, making the Morrison one of the most picturesque and dramatic Mesozoic landscapes of all.
