This walking tour of Angkor Wat in Cambodia was filmed on April 23, 2023.
Start of the walk at 16:30 (16:00)
Angkor Wat is one of the largest religious monuments in the world, located in the forests of Cambodia, in the floodplain of the Mekong River. The most famous temple complex of Cambodia was built in the first half of the 12th century in honor of Vishnu and abandoned in the next century. He personifies the heavenly abode of this god. Angkor Wat is so important to Cambodians that it is featured on the country's flag and in the national currency, the riel.
Angkor Wat arose thanks to the ruler of the Khmer Empire, Suryavarman II. Angkor Wat is a rectangular area of about 210 hectares, surrounded by a stone wall and a geometric moat, symbolizing the ocean of milk, from which, according to legend, the elixir of immortality, amrita, was made. The main entrance is located in the west, which is considered atypical for Asian architecture.
The main attraction of Angkor Wat are the towers in its central part 65 meters high.
Four towers are located at the corners of a rectangular platform, and the fifth one is in the center. This central tower symbolizes the sacred Mount Meru, the abode of the gods. Every year on the vernal equinox, the sun rises directly above this central tower. Sunlight passes through a hole in the keystone, then through a hole in the floor through a 27m deep shaft into a secret underground room.
The walls of the temple are decorated with giant basreliefs depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata epics, as well as the history of the Khmer Empire, including the exploits of Suryavarman II, the life of Vishnu, Rama and Krishna. Angkor Wat is also decorated with figures of demigoddessapsara dancers. From the middle of the 15th to the 18th centuries, wall paintings appeared in the shrine, in which one can distinguish mythological characters, gods, elements of architecture, animals, water transport and musical instruments. Angkor Wat was only the central part of the huge city located outside its walls. According to scientists, more than 750 thousand people lived in this city. Today all traces of human settlement are hidden by the jungle. And only the temple itself reminds us of the once great Khmer Empire. Walking through the Anchor complex, you get the feeling that you are in another universe, as if you accidentally got into the era of the Game of Thrones. And this is not a fantasy film, this is reality. Some rulers destroyed these beautiful fortresses and temples, and for many hundreds of years they were abandoned. And then they were swallowed up by the jungle.

I went to the temple in the evening, half an hour before the temple closed. And I made it to the top of the temple. While I was walking along the very top of the temple where the rulers of this empire lived, everyone had already left and I was left alone. And only the guards constantly asked me to leave. The feeling when there is no one, there are no crowds of tourists and no one is screaming is incredible. You walk these corridors, you watch the sunset.
