Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the motion of the hip. Muscles and nerves involved in hip motion.

The hip moves in three different planes:
1Sagittal plane flexion/extension
2Frontal plane abduction/adduction
3Transverse plane external/internal rotation
Normal range of the motion of the hip
Flexion125 degrees
Extension 1015 degrees
Abduction 45 degrees
Adduction 30 degrees
External rotation 45 degrees
Internal rotation 40 degrees.
What are the muscles that contributre to hip flexion?
There are three muscle:
1Iliopsoas
2Rectus femoris muscle
3Sartorius muscle
The three muscles are innervated by the femoral nerve. The iliopsoas, rectus femoris and Sartorius muscles are hip flexors and are innervated by the femoral nerve.
What are the muscles that extend the hip?
Two muscles extend the hip
1Gluteus maximus muscle: innervated by the inferior gluteal nerve
2Hamstring muscles: innervated by the sciatic nerve.
What muscles abduct the hip?
1Gluteus minimus muscle
2Gluteus medius muscle
Both are innervated by the superior gluteal nerve
What are the muscles that adduct the hip?
1Adductor brevis muscle (Anterior or posterior branch obturator nerve)
2Adductor longus muscle(Anterior branch obturator nerve)
3Adductor magnus muscle(posterior branch obturator nerve and sciatic nerve)
4Gracilis muscle(Anterior branch obturator nerve)
The obturator nerve supplies these four muscles that adduct the hip.
External rotation of the hip
Short external rotators and gluteal muscles. Six short external rotators of the hip :
1Pirifomis muscle
2Superior gemellus muscle
3Obturator internus muscle
4Inferior gemellus muscle
5Obturator externus muscle
6Quadratus femoris muscle.
What are the nerves that supply the six short external rotators of the hip?
The nerve to piriformis innervates the piriformis muscle
The nerve to obturator internus supplies the obturator internus muscle and gemellus superior muscles.
Nerve to obturator externus from the posterior division of the obturator nerve innervates the obturator externus muscle
The nerve to quadratus femoris innervates the quadratus femoris and gemellus inferior muscles.
What two muscles does the nerve to obturator internus innervate?
1Obturator internus
2Superior gemellus
What two muscles does the nerve to quadratus femoris innervate?
1Quadratus femoris
2Inferior gemellus
Internal rotation
What muscle is the primary internal roattor of the hip?
Gluteus medius muscle: innervated by the superior gluteal nerve.
