Noone expected the brushtailed rockwallaby to be pregnant, as the joey’s father had left the zoo more than a year ago. This phenomenon, called embryonic diapause, is a survival mechanism that allows the mother to delay the embryo's development, thus postponing the birth until a favourable habitat is found.
