The American Staffordshire Terrier also known as Amstaff is a mediumsized, shortcoated American dog breed. The American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) were bred from the same lineage, but were bred in two different directions and received different names from the two American kennel clubs; Staffordshire was the name given by the American Kennel Club (AKC), and American Pit Bull Terrier by the United Kennel Club (UKC).

Some historians contend it was the White English Terrier, Fox Terrier, or the Black and Tan Terrier that were crossed with the Bulldog of that day to develop the Staffordshire Terrier; the three terrier breeds shared many traits. This new breed created by breeding Old English Terriers and Old English Bulldogs together produced a dog that combined the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the bulldog.

The American Staffordshire Terrier should give the impression of great strength for his size, a well puttogether dog, muscular, but agile and graceful, keenly alive to his surroundings. He should be stocky, not longlegged or racy in outline. Height and weight should be in proportion. A height of about 18 to 19 inches (46 to 48 cm) at shoulders for the male and 17 to 18 inches (43 to 46 cm) for the female is to be considered preferable.
Their life expectancy is generally 12 years with good care but could extend longer with good fortune. The breed may be vulnerable to skin allergies, urinary tract infections (UTI), and autoimmune diseases. Spondylosis and osteoarthritis are common in older dogs.
The American Staffordshire Terrier is an intelligent, happy, outgoing, stable, and confident dog. Gentle and loving toward people, it is a goodnatured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet. It is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, this dog wants nothing more than to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of life. Over the past 50 years, careful breeding has produced this friendly, trustworthy, dog that is an especially good dog for children. Courageous and a persistent fighter if provoked. Highly protective of his owners, it will fight an enemy to the death if the enemy traps the dog in a corner and threatens its loved ones. This breed has a very high tolerance for pain. Some unsocialized Am Staffs may be dog aggressive. Am Staffs should be socialized very thoroughly when young to curb any dog aggressive tendencies. When properly trained and socialized, the Staff makes a great family companion. This breed is not for the passive owner who does not understand that all dogs have an instinct to have a pack order. They need a firm, confident, consistent owner who understands how to display proper leadership. The objective in training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in its pack, it is the human’s responsibility to set the pack’s agenda and hierarchy. You and all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. That is the only way your relationship can be a success.
