Historic Amana Colonies Iowa | RV America Y'all

One of the things we love most about fulltime RV living is that we have the time to explore great places that we've heard about for years. That is the case with the historic Amana Colonies in Iowa! We have visited so many interesting places in the American Midwest. And the villages of Amana IA are amongst our favorite RV destinations this year.

The Iowa Amana Colonies are a National Historic Landmark and one of America's longest running communal societies. The Community of True Inspiration was founded in Germany in 1714. They moved around Germany and into New York before settling in Iowa in 1855. Upon arriving in Iowa, they established 6 villages spread a mile or two from each other: Amana, Middle Amana, High Amana, East Amana, West Amana and South Amana. They added the existing village of Homestead to the community in 1861 to provide access to the railroad.

The villages supported themselves via farming and craftsmanship. Goods that were produced in the Amana Colonies were exported, but the colonists relied solely from within the villages for everything they needed and used. This way of life ended abruptly in 1932 when the colonists voted to abandon the communal lifestyle, for one more similar to that of other local communities.

The biggest thing to come out of Amana? Amana appliances now owned by Whirlpool! And yes, Amana appliances are still made in Amana.

Today, a visit to the Amana Colonies in Amana, Iowa is a step back in time. We enjoyed our stay at the Amana RV Park and loved being able to ride our bikes into town on the bike path. Be sure to visit the Amana villages next time you are in Iowa on your USA RV road trip!
