ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________

Meet Dawn & Dusk

Named Dawn & Dusk by fans of this channel, the chicks are growing up fast. Watch as they bob their heads… and stretch out those long legs!

Foster mum Luna is possessive

Male owl, Bomber, is first back with food. But Luna intercepts him in the entrance. She wants to be the one to feed the chicks. She snatches the food from him and sends him out for more! It’s incredible how possessive she is of them. It’s so heartwarming to see the owlets so well cared for!

Wing flapping

The chicks are growing up fast and soon begin to work on their flapping technique. It won’t be long before they’re ready to leave the nest.

ID rings

As fledging day approaches, it’s time for the owlets to get their ID rings. The rings have individual numbers on and the chicks are weighed. The first is 375g and the second 405g.

Pin feathers

The chicks are developing pin feathers. These are all full of blood which will feed each feather as it grows.

Tawy chick eyes

Note the pink eye ring around the eyes. People often think tawny owlets have eye infections but the colouring is normal, as is the blue cast on the eye, is absolutely normal.

Branching

The chicks are about a month old at this stage, and they can easily be out of the nest already… out on the branches, hopping from branch to branch.

Next time

The tawny owlets prepare for life beyond the nest, spending their days taking in the world outside.
And soon they'll be ready to take to the wing!
