I’m in the UK and am seeing more and more cats flown over from countries outside of the UK. The tend to have started life as street cats with some contact with people, where generally they are not pets sleeping in a warm bed in someones house, but they are generally fed by people and are people friendly.

I am finding some of these cats struggle to adapt to domestic life in their new home and would love to know your experiences too. I have met a number of cats who have found an inside life challenging and are climbing the walls without having the opportunity to roam and spend time out there. A free living life is an active life and their new lifestyle, although much safer, may not been meeting all of their needs in terms of giving them outlets for their active behaviour, no matter how much effort their new owners put in!

Those with free access outside tend to fare much better and settle well. But giving restricted outside access, such as taking out on harness or just letting them out when you are home to supervise, again can cause frustration. Have you had cats that have coped ok with this? Or shown similar problems?

And what about their relationships with other cats? Some seem to get on really well with their new feline companions and show no problems at all. Others struggle sharing a territory and are super confident with it, chasing others away and wanting the place to themselves. In some cases, the aggressive behaviour can be severe.

So if you’re living with a cat you adopted from abroad, tell me about them! How did they cope with the journey? What sort of life did they have before? How have they adjusted to domestic life with you? I want to know! Hoping there will be lots of stories of happy cats, but let's talk about the challenges you may have faced along the way too.

Have a lovely day with your cat!
