Using wooden stakes and string as a guide, Chelsea Lipford Wolf and her guest dug a small trench under a picket fence. Once the trench was level at about 2 1/5 inches deep, they began adding old, salvaged bricks to the space. This will help prevent grass from growing up against the fence, making it easier to mow each time. It also serves as a "track" for a lawn mower tire without banging up the fence in the process.
