DETOXING YOUR PET + DOSAGES:
Hey Guys, Im Dr. Lindsay Butzer a small animal veterinarian. Today were going to teach you when to use Activated Charcoal to bind toxins in your pets stomach, what dose and how to give it to detox your pet if they ate something toxic and you cannot get to a veterinarian.

The most common toxic substances ingested by dogs I see in the ER are:
Chocolate, Marijuana, coffee Kcups or COFFEE beans, Xilitol in gums and processed foods, grapes, and Tylenol or Advil and Lilly flowers in cats.

Activated charcoal when ingested by pets, goes into the stomach and through the intestines where it absorbs and binds any of the chemicals or toxicants within the GI tract. Once it binds the toxins it facilitates excretion via the feces, and your pets will poop it out black, just like it came in.

But before you give Activated Charcoal, and you notice your pet ate these substances, you should immediate try to make them vomit out what they ingested using 3% Hydrogen Peroxide which you can buy from any drug store.

The dose to make them vomit is 1ml per pound of body weight. This means a 10lb dog would need 10ml and a 80 pound Labrador would need about ½ cup of peroxide. And is safe to give to make them vomit. Cats on the other hand may not vomiting using hydrogen peroxide and you will need to bring them to your veterinarian.

If it has been more than 1 hour, vomiting can be unsuccessful at expelling's the toxins and that is when we definitely need Activated Charcoal.

The dose for dexoting your pet using Activated Charcoal is 0.5 – 1.5 grams per pound of body weight (0.51.5gm/lb); therefore a 5lb dog would need 2.5 to 7.5 grams of activated charcoal. A 10lb dog would need 515 grams. A 100lb dog would need 50150 grams.

As a pet parent you may only have access to capsules sold at your local drug stores such as CVS or WALGREENS these are normally 250mg per capsule. So you will feel like you are giving a lot of capsules, but don’t worry, activated charcoal is safe and you wont overdose them on it. They will poop it out.

So, to not complicate the math, A safe rule of thumb is to give a 10lb dog up to 5 to 20 capsules of the 250mg of activated charcoal. You really cannot over dose your pet on activated charcoal. Just use common sense and don’t give them the entire bottle, unless you have a mastiff then you may need it.

To give it, you simply pill your dog's with the activated charcoal pills or you can open the pills and mix it into some wet food or yogurt for your pet to lick up OR you can mix it in water and gently syringe feed it to your dog. At vet hospitals we have liquid bottled forms that we use.

Depending on what toxin your pet ate, I advise all pet owners to give them 24 activated charcoal pills every 68 hours or three times a day, for 2 days to continue to bind any recirculating toxins in the blood stream that go through the GI tract.

Alright guys, like always, see your veterinarian if you have a toxic emergency. Don’t forget to Subscribe to my channel and I’ll see you next week with another veterinary video!
