I own and have used a couple of gathering feet (foots?) and those are easier for heavy gathering, but it's hard to control the finished width of the piece you are gathering. So I like this hand gathering method, if I need the gathering to fit a certain width. Be sure to use strong thread, so it doesn't break during the gathering process! You can test this by pulling the thread apart to see if it breaks before using it.
