Here, I played Bach Cello Suite no. 2 in D Minor. This second suite, along with the fifth, are the only two of Bach’s six suites written in a minor key; this reflects in the melodic and harmonic complexity of each suite, telling of a dark, brooding story, with rays of light shining through here and there. Cellist Steven Isserlis once remarked that the six suites represent somewhat the life of Christ, with the second (and fifth) suite hinting at the Crucifixion. I like that interpretation. You can feel an inspiration while playing when you think of it that way. But I also feel we can simplify it a bit, make it a bit more personal: for me, Suite no. 2 can represent one’s teenage years, with angst and agitation to grow up, a little internal turmoil, but also joy at the simple things in life; for the world, perhaps the second suite can convey a prayer, a dedication to all those suffering globally right now.
