Recently I was privileged to meet a rescued Swainson’s hawk overwintering at our California Raptor Center. An examination of the hawk by our student, Tirragen, was so cool to see. I’ve also slimmed down my "Mondays with Mark" series to a minute or less, and so in honor of the change, we’re rebranding it "A Minute with Mark".

As you’ll see in the video, the hawk had a broken leg that our veterinarians were able to surgically repair. Swainson’s hawk are migratory, so the now healthy hawk is waiting for her friends to return from South and Central America in March to be released.

The @CaliforniaRaptorCent is dedicated to the rehabilitation of injured and orphaned raptors. Over the past five years, the center has rehabilitated and released more than 350 raptors back to the wild. The center has exciting news! It has partnered with the @UCDavisEngineering to establish a bird flight research center, funded by a $3 million grant. The new facility built at the center will use motion capture and photogrammetry technologies to image and design models of birds in flight.
