Short Film: Keep Your Mouth Shut
Written and Directed by: Dan Roe
Produced by: Adam Carl
Cast: Brett Davern, Sophie Kargman, Thomas Wilson Brown, Megan Rosati, Steve Bannos, Laraine Newman

A man witnesses a shocking crime. In exchange for his life, he promises to never tell anyone what he saw. But can he keep his word?

In the accurate representation of being in the wrong time and place, Aaron tries to put up Christmas lights on the roof of his suburban house when he notices a man confronting his neighbor before he shoots him dead in the head. Witnessing the whole episode, the man looks at Aaron on the roof and threatens him to swear for absolute silence in exchange for his own life. His obscure secret begins to sink in, and his burden becomes unbearable. Unsure at first, Aaron breaks his word and confesses the incident in the middle of a bar. Scared and uneasy, he quickly becomes the target of mockery and sham while everyone judges his cowardly actions.

Aaron’s trauma molds the version of his story while finding an opportunity of
acknowledgment and appreciation in his now new, selfbuilt heroic act. Full of lies, he sets up
an entire fearless reputation until the killer suddenly shows up in the bedroom next to his
girlfriend, claiming once again, a word had been broken. Shooting Aaron dead in the head, his
partner is the only witness who may grant the story to repeat one more time.

In this powerful 8minute short film, a whole new concept is easily introduced by the strong
interactions between the characters; how the killer is portrayed as the avenger of honor,
responsibility, and word. In the excruciating burden Aaron carries, he sees a splinter of liberty
and chance, as his word is nothing but that and no apparent connection remains after the killer
is gone. In this huge and surreal loop, it makes us question, what if there’s always a guardian
vigilant of what we compromise too? Apparently, we aren’t faithful to our word even if our lives
depend on it. They define our choices and therefore, who we are.
