This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. A unique performance from Daulute in the stage of TEDxHeraklion.

Formed in 2010 by three musicians from the island of Crete, Daulute brings a unique and dynamic sound to the interpretation of Greek traditional music. It presents an extensive Cretan repertoire as a basis, while it also explores other Greek music idioms and improvisations. Motivated by their common love and respect for Greek music, the musicians endeavour to develop an alternative world music sound.
George Zacharioudakis revives the almost extinct Cretan flutes (pipes and whistles) and adapts cane and metal flutes from other traditions (Western flute, Indian bansuri, Celtic whistles) in the body of Greek music. Dimitris Sideris focuses on the Cretan lute and extends its technique by adapting elements from related string instruments. John Papatzanis extends the technical capabilities of the Cretan daouli (percussion) as well as incorporating other traditional percussions (Persian tombak, Indian udughatam, Middle Eastern frame drums).

Με αφετηρία την κοινή τους αναζήτηση και αγάπη για την παραδοσιακή μουσική, οι τρεις καλλιτέχνες αναπτύσσουν ένα δυναμικό και εξαιρετικά ιδιαίτερο μουσικό στυλ. Ο Γιώργος Ζαχαριουδάκης αναβιώνει τα παραδοσιακά πνευστά (θιαμπόλι, διπλομάντουρο, ασκομαντούρα / τσαμπούνα) ενώ προσαρμόζει στο ελληνικό ιδίωμα πνευστά από άλλες παραδόσεις (κέλτικα whistles, δυτικό φλάουτο, ινδικό bansuri). Ο Δημήτρης Σιδερής επικεντρώνεται στο κρητικό λαούτο αναπτύσσοντας την τεχνική του και υιοθετώντας νέα στοιχεία από συγγενικά πνευστά. Ο Γιάννης Παπατζανής εξελίσσει τις τεχνικές του Αιγαιακού, παραδοσιακού κρουστού (τουμπί) ενώ παράλληλα εξερευνά ήχους κρουστών από άλλες κουλτούρες (περσικό tombak, αφρικανικό udu, frame drums από τη Μέση Ανατολή καθώς και ελβετικό hang drum).
