A 'Little Africa' in Paris: Château Rouge

Follow
Street Walk TV

The Paris neighborhood of Château Rouge is known as an "African neighborhood." But what indeed lies beneath this picture? Street Walk TV demonstrates that the area's economic usage, which put this neighborhood at the center of massive mobilizations, had more to do with it than the residents' backgrounds.

Like any big city, Paris has a variety of neighborhoods, each of whose identities are shaped and reshaped by activities related to immigrationrelated commerce. For example, the Château Rouge neighborhood in Paris' 18th arrondissement (city district), located in the shadow of SacréCoeur at the base of Montmartre's eastern slopes, is frequently referred to as an "African quarter."

Although the neighborhood's population comprises foreigners from SubSaharan Africa and North Africa (as in other parts of northern and eastern Paris), their presence alone cannot account for the disproportionately high number of Africans that frequent this area. Moreover, the abundance of specialty shops, which polarises the consumption habits of people of African or Caribbean origin, the majority of whom do not live in the neighborhood but give it its reputation, generates an "African centrality" at the metropolitan level.
