Samburu National Reserve in central Kenya. A mother oryx conceals her newborn fawn in a thicket, visiting him only when it’s time to nurse. But when a lioness appears, the mother flees, abandoning her baby to its fate. The solitary lioness approaches the tiny, terrified creature but makes no attempt to kill it. Instead, she sits down nearby and keeps watch. Over the course of the day, a maternal bond develops between the two, and the fawn, growing hungry, even attempts to nurse.
