In 1633 the convent of Ursulines in Loudun, France,
became the scene of an outbreak of what
was described as diabolical possession.
Many of the nuns sequestered in the
convent showed all of the signs of possession,
including speaking in tongues, convulsive fits.
That's not all the nuns barked, screamed blasphemies
and acted out obscene contortions.

The affair grew in volume until practically all the nuns
belonging to the institution were in the same condition.
A total of 27 nuns claimed to be possessed,
obsessed, or bewitched.
The Exorcisms became a popular public
spectacle conducted at the Ursuline convent.
Though the whole affair had blown over by 1634
with the execution of the main protagonist,
exorcisms continued until 1637.
