I climbed in the Cessna 172SP NAVIII simulator to demonstrate the dreaded cross controlled stall on base to final. Full training video to come.
Good news is that you've REALLY got to get slow, overshoot final, and decide NOT to go around... Forcing the tight turn with rudder, and using opposite aileron to keep the bank gentle... Causing a skidding turn. The low wing stalls because of higher angle of attack. The right aileron compounds that.
The approach started to go bad sixty seconds before impact, and I had 57 seconds to decide to go around. The last three seconds, it was too late.
Tried recovery after the wing dipped FIVE times. I'm not saying it's impossible to recover, but I couldn't five times in a row, and I was expecting it.
Again, full training video with more angles and brief/debrief to follow.
Fly safe!
