History of flatcoated retrievers:
The FlatCoat arrived out of the desire to create a selectivelybred bird dog. The breed cites in its ancestry the Retriever Proper, a crossbreed emerging from the Large Newfoundland, setter, sheepdog, and spaniellike water dogs, in addition to various other breeds that have contributed the FlatCoat's unique stature and appearance.
It was this stock that produced an important nucleus to the development of the breed, though the greatest credit for integration of these retrievers into a stable type goes to S.E. Shirley, founder of the Kennel Club in 1873.

Training for flat coated retrievers:
The FlatCoat excels as a family companion. He requires regular vigorous exercise, however, due to his working heritage. He is a versatile working dog, multitalented sensible, bright, and tractable. Dog sports such as obedience, agility and hunt tests provide both mental and physical exercise. The FlatCoat demonstrates stability and a desire to please with a confident, optimistic, and outgoing attitude characterized by a wagging tail.
