How to Conserve Water at Home

Reduce Toilet Water Waste

MATERIALS
2liter or ½gallon bottle
Water or rocks/sand (to weigh down bottle)

INSTRUCTIONS
Fill up your bottle with water, rocks, or sand in order to weigh it down so it doesn’t shift in the toilet tank.
Place it inside the toilet tank.
This will reduce the amount of water that fills up your toilet tank, thus reducing the amount of water used per flush.


Conserve Water While Brushing Your Teeth

MATERIALS
No materials required.

INSTRUCTIONS
While brushing your teeth, turn off the tap instead of letting the water run the entire time.


Conserve Cold Shower Water

MATERIALS
5gallon bucket

INSTRUCTIONS
Instead of wasting water while waiting for your shower to heat up, place a bucket under the stream of water to catch the cold water.
Use this water to do household chores, water plants, cook, etc.


Cut Down on Shower Time

MATERIALS
No materials required.

INSTRUCTIONS
Take note of your average shower time and cut it down by at least a minute. This will help you save gallons of water per shower. If you’re up for the challenge, cut your shower time down by more than a single minute.


Save Water While Washing Dishes

MATERIALS
No materials required.

INSTRUCTIONS
While washing your dishes, scrub them down before soaping them instead of using water to try and break everything down. Also, don’t keep the faucet running while you wash the dishes, try only turning the water on when you do the final rinse on your dishes.


Heat and Chill your Water

MATERIALS
Reusable water bottle or water container
Pot or kettle

INSTRUCTIONS
Rather than waiting for super cold or extra hot water to come out of your tap, heat your water using a pot or a tea kettle, and always have chilled at your disposal water by always having a water container in the fridge or freezer.


Save Water While Washing Hands

MATERIALS
No materials required.

INSTRUCTIONS
Turn of the faucet as your scrub your hands clean in the sink, only turn it on for the final rinse.
