Among Stoics, perhaps Epictetus was the one who faced many difficulties in life. He was born into slavery, and didn’t even have a name. Epictetus literally means “Acquired One” which is a name given to him by his master.

Epictetus was a Greek philosopher, born around 55 CE. He had a lifelong disability, either from birth or potentially inflicted by his master. However, his master soon recognized his intellectual potential and allowed him to study philosophy. He became a student of “Musonius Rufus” who was himself a great stoic philosopher.
