The Busy Gardener

It's hard to believe we planted the orchard 5 YEARS AGO! Hindsight IS 20/20, and there were number of things I didn't know to consider when I'd first planned and planted the orchard. While I'm really proud of how the trees have been doing, there are a few things I wish I'd done differently at the outset. Thankfully there were no especially fatal errors (except the poor avocados). In this video, I talk through what I would have done differently if I were to do this all over again.

When it comes to organic gardening, ESPECIALLY with fruit trees, planning makes all the difference. When planting fruit trees in your backyard, whether fruit trees in pots, fruit trees in containers, or a full fledged intheground fruit trees garden, You want to have a plan. I've leaned heavily on Dave Wilson Nursery (and videos by Tom Spellman) for planning, utilizing techniques for high density planting fruit trees and gardening; A concept they call backyard orchard culture. This is essentially where you utilize successive ripening of similar fruit to have your front yard fruit trees producing fruit for an extended harvest season. Orchard planning will help determine where you are considering planting fruit trees. There are different things to consider when planting citrus, compared to planting apple trees or planting peach trees. Mulching your garden makes a big difference in the overall health of your soil, and will require less watering and creates an environment for your dwarf fruit trees to thrive. Growing fruit trees is not rocket science, so whether you've got just one fruit tree, or and entire food forest, use these gardening tips to help you!
