ECHOES

Dive with me into the depths of sea mysteries and tragedies, where stories of lost submarines come alive under the dim light of untold secrets.

1. USS Tang On October 24, 1944, during a patrol in the Taiwan Strait, USS Tang fired a torpedo that malfunctioned, circled back, and hit the submarine itself, causing it to sink. Three rear compartments were instantly flooded, resulting in the death of all military personnel in those areas. Out of the crew, 29 sailors managed to survive initially, but after a series of events, including an explosion due to rising pressure inside the submarine, over seventynine crew members died. In the end, only nine people reached the surface and survived the ordeal.
2. Kursk (K141) On August 15, 2000, the Kursk, a nuclearpowered cruise missile submarine, suffered an explosion during military exercises in the Barents Sea. A second, larger explosion followed, likely due to the detonation of the remaining torpedoes. The submarine sank to a depth of 108 meters. All 118 crew members aboard the Kursk died, with 23 survivors initially alive after the second explosion but eventually dying likely from carbon monoxide intoxication.
3. USS Thresher On April 9, 1963, the Thresher was conducting a test dive east of Cape Cod when it lost contact with the surface. It is believed to have experienced a catastrophic event related to a failure in its systems or structure, leading to its sinking. All 129 crew members on board died.
4. USS Scorpion In 1968, the USS Scorpion, a nuclearpowered submarine, disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean. The submarine was later found on the ocean floor, broken into pieces. The exact cause of its sinking remains unknown, and all 99 crew members aboard were lost.
5. Titan Submersible On June 18, 2023, a submersible named Titan, carrying Hamish Harding and four other people, imploded while diving to see the sunken Titanic remains. The implosion was likely caused by high pressure and defects in the vehicle's body, which was made of carbon fiber, an experimental material not previously tested at such depths. All five people aboard died instantly.
