As a new corrections officer, your first day on the job can be one of the most challenging experiences of your career. The corrections profession is not for the faint of heart, and the first day can be especially daunting. In this video, we'll discuss five key points that make the first day challenging for corrections officers.

Firstly, the pace of the job is fast. Corrections officers are responsible for maintaining order and ensuring the safety of inmates and staff members. You will need to learn quickly how to move through the facility efficiently while remaining alert and vigilant at all times.

Secondly, inmates will judge you. As a new corrections officer, you will be scrutinized by inmates who are always on the lookout for weakness or vulnerability. It's essential to remain confident and assertive while also treating inmates with respect and dignity.

Thirdly, you will experience a lot of emotions. Corrections officers witness some of the most traumatic and distressing situations imaginable. On your first day, you may be confronted with aggressive or violent behavior, and it's essential to remain calm and composed while still doing your job effectively.

Fourthly, you must look individuals in the eye when speaking to them. Corrections officers must establish a sense of authority and mutual respect with inmates. One way to do this is to maintain eye contact while speaking to them. It shows that you are confident and in control.

Lastly, you have to say the word no. As a corrections officer, you will be required to enforce rules and regulations. There will be times when you will have to say no, even if it's to a request or demand from an inmate. It's essential to be firm but fair and to explain the reason for your decision.

In conclusion, the first day as a corrections officer can be a challenging experience. But by understanding and being prepared for the five key points we discussed, you can overcome the obstacles and start your career on the right foot.
