Bigtime cat lovers know that felines come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. Each individual breed usually has unique characteristics, too, which could make them your perfect pet or cause you to steer clear. Finding the cat that matches your lifestyle and personality can be a difficult task and it may take some searching.
There are numerous rare cat breeds, and we compiled our list using information from the CFA. Every year, the CFA publishes a ranked list of its cat breeds, which is organised by the number of registrations received during the previous year. The number of registrations usually corresponds to the number of kittens born throughout the year. Because the lower ranks have fewer births, those cat breeds are becoming increasingly rare. The most recent list from the CFA was published in early 2021, and it reflects the number of registrations received throughout 2021. These are the world's rarest cat breeds, according to the CFA's 2017 rankings.

Number 5. Havana Brown.

In the early 1950s, a group of British cat fanciers purposefully developed Havana Browns in England. To create the chocolate brown Havanas, the group crossed chocolate point and seal point Siamese cats with black domestic shorthairs. Russian Blues were introduced to the breeding stock at an early stage in the programme. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) recognised the Havana Brown as an official breed for the first time in 1958. The Chestnut Foreign Shorthair was the breed's original name until 1970, when it was changed to Havana Brown.
The Havana Brown breed standard in North America has remained consistent with the original Havanas imported in the 1950s. To expand the limited Havana Brown gene pool, Havana Brown breeders in North America were allowed to start breeding with unregistered black or blue domestic shorthairs, certain colours of Oriental Shorthairs, or chocolate point or seal point Siamese in 1998/1999.

Number 4. Burmilla.

In 1981, a Chinchilla Persian male accidentally had kittens with a Lilac Burmese female in the United Kingdom, giving birth to the Burmilla. Baroness Miranda Von Kirchberg bought the Chinchilla Persian for her husband as a present. He had briefly escaped from the house and impregnated the Lilac Burmese before the Baroness could have the Chinchilla Persian neutered.

The kittens born as a result of the chance meeting were so beautiful that a breeding programme for the newly created Burmillas was established. In the United States, the breed is still uncommon, with only a handful of Burmilla breeders.

Number 3. LaPerm.

The LaPerm, like all of the cats on this list of rare cats, has its own distinct personality. LaPerms are distinguished by their curly fur, which comes in a variety of colours and patterns. The coats of this breed can be anything from wavy to tight ringlets to long corkscrew curls.

The LaPerm was created by a genetic mutation in a regular litter of tabby cats, just like a few of the other breeds on this list. Linda Koehl, an Oregon farmer, gave birth to the first LaPerm kitten in 1982. Koehl did not attempt to selectively breed this unique curlyhaired cat over the next decade, but more of them were born on the farm. After isolating a few of the curlyhaired cats, Koehl discovered that the curly gene was present in both parents. Because of its unique curly/wavy hair, Koehl named the new breed LaPerm.
