“Tails” from #KittenSeason

Yesterday, 5 kittens were left at Pet Alliance in a bucket. These 45weekolds were covered in fleas and dirt, so we immediately gave them a bath.

While very cute and we’re happy to have taken them out of harm's way, this happens dozens of times a day at the height of kitten season. So we thought it would be a good time to refresh our followers on proper kitten season etiquette.

[How can we prevent Kitten Season?]

1. Get pets spayed and neutered. Pet Alliance offers incredible lowcost options for dogs and cats at our Alafaya Clinic. 2. Support Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) efforts in your neighborhood for colony cats.

[What do I do if I find kittens?]

The rule of thumb is “Wait till 8” before bringing pets to the shelter — meaning 8 weeks old.

If kittens are younger than 8 weeks old, wait for mom. She’s usually off hunting or got spooked, but she’s never too far away from her kittens. If the kittens are in a safe area (not too hot or cold), give it several hours for mom to come back and don’t hover. Mom is their best chance at survival. If the kittens are dirty and crying after you’ve waited, there’s a good indication that they need help.

[If you pick up homeless kittens, be prepared to foster them]

Only after you have waited several hours and are certain mom isn’t coming back that you can remove the kittens. But don’t take this lightly.

If you aren’t prepared to foster the kittens yourself, there are limited options for taking care of them. These kittens for instance were just dropped off. So based on our existing fosters, we had to separate the litter based on availability. Pet Alliance can help new fosters get the hang of kitten care at any age, and will help them get adopted once they’re 8 weeks old and 2lbs. If you have questions about kitten season or have found a kitten you’d like to foster please call (407) 3517722.
