5000 mile Frogg Toggs Ultralight Rain Jacket Review

You can't get much cheaper or lighter than a Frogg Toggs rain jacket when it comes to hiking and backpacking... but it does come with some SERIOUS downsides.

If you would like to try one for yourself, they are cheap! and can be found here:

I've used this jacket on the Appalachian Trail, Florida Trail, Sheltowee Trace Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Pacific Northwest Trail, Uinta Highline Trail, and many others! It has served me well for the most part but I've also had some really scary experiences with it.

Given it's poor durability and baggy loose fit, it will catch on just about anything you brush up against and very easily rip to shreds. Leaving you cold and wet in the rain, and out of luck until the next town. In many cases this wouldn't be so horrible if you're hiking in the summer but could certainly lead to hyperthermia in many other cases.

I am personally switching away from this rain jacket for future thru hikes, but still think it would be a great starter ultralight rain jacket, or a jacket you just use on shorter overnight trips.
