Mount Nebo is significant because of its role in the Old Testament. The Bible says that Mount Nebo was where Moses lived out his final days and saw the Promised Land, which he would never enter. It is said that Moses' body may be buried here, although that has yet to be proven.
For more than 100 hundred years, archaeological explorations in the region have been uncovering remains of buildings, chiefly of the Byzantine and early Islamic periods, with mosaics of extraordinary richness and variety. The decorations of these mosaics are of great interest to students of art, religion and society during these periods.
