Genoa played an important role as an important port since the Roman ages. Especially in the medieval period the city developed as an mediterrannean powerhouse and became a powerful maritime republic with many Genoese colonies and trade posts in France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. The city became very rich because of these possessions and trade routes. Some highlights of the city are the historical centre with Piazza de Ferrari and the XX Settembre Street, the Castelletto quarter and Porto Antico. Genoa has a population of 600,000.
