The seemingly compact 12 page resumé can take on a colossal presence in your mind on the journey back to work after a career break. You may be putting off writing one because it feels confusing, daunting, or BOTH.

But we're here to give you some direction and inspiration. In this video, we share 3 rules for presenting a career break on your resumé:

First, you need to know if you even need to claim a career break: the threshold. Do you address a 1 year maternity leave? Or a career break that was 10 years ago, but you've worked since? Or a 15year career break that you're inclined to hide? We provide the answers on what to address and HOW.
Next, you need to present the gap as real experience don't bury it. Oftentimes, career returners throw everything into the Volunteer section at the end and forget that unpaid work is still WORK.
And lastly, you need to provide context and scale by using business language and [favorable] metrics to show what you've accomplished and what you can bring to your next role.

You did plenty during your career break as a caregiver, advocate, volunteer, and/or community leader. All of this is real work with valuable transferrable skills that belongs on your resumé front and center.
