240V connected to a 100V Digital Betacam recorder which cost thousands. What happens?

The Sony DVWA500 Digital Betacam recorder cost thousands in its day, and they can still fetch a good price today. Ours is rated for 100V AC as it was from the Japanese market. So would it be a good idea to connect 240V UK mains to it? Will it go bang? Has it been modified already? Is it so over engineered that it just works? Or is it really quite OK for 240V operation despite the label?
