THOMAS MICHAEL BOYD (COACH): A graduate of New Site High School (1970) and Auburn University (1975), Boyd, 71, began his coaching career in 1976 at Coffee County High School in Douglas (GA). He moved back home to New Site High School in 1980 where he served as boys’ basketball coach, football coach and athletic director for the next 11 years compiling a 7656 football coaching record – the most wins in New Site school history. His boys’ basketball record was 198100. He coached the girls one season.
The school merged with Davison and Hackneyville in Tallapoosa County to form brandnew Horseshoe Bend High School in 1992. Boyd, who played for HallofFame Coach Bryant Yates at New Site, became the athletic director and boys’ and girls’ basketball coach, and he served as interim head football coach for two years during his span until his retirement in 2015. Boyd’s boys’ basketball record with the Generals was 265317 and girls’ record was 227128 – giving him an overall career boys’ basketball coaching 463417 and record of and 231138 for girls – a total of 694 combined wins in 1,249 games. His overall football record was 8579.
Boyd, who served eight years in the Army Reserves and played basketball collegiately at Alexander City Junior College, represented District 4 on the AHSAA Basketball Coaches Committee from 20092012 and coached in the 2010 NorthSouth AllStar Basketball Game. He spent 38 years coaching and teaching in Tallapoosa County becoming an icon for his characterbuilding example and kindness through his work in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). His door was always open to all students.
In 2013, the gymnasium at Horseshoe Bend High School was named in Boyd’s honor.
That recognition was made even more special since he played in the state tournament as a student for New Site High School and played in the 1970 AHSAA AllStar Basketball Game representing New Site. His mentor was his high school coach Bryan Yates, who had the New Site gymnasium named in his honor. Now both will share another special recognition – being inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.
