I made a video to show you general things to look for when buying ANY car, like Body shape, signs of wear, leaks, etc... The link is included below. Use that as the basis, but now let’s dig into things to look for in this car specifically.

Start here. I walk you through my inspection process:

Keep in mind that it is never a bad idea to bring along a car savvy friend who is familiar with these cars to help you look for things. If you find one that you have your heart set on, I would also recommend you get a PPI (or PrePurchase Inspection) done by an experienced [car manufacturer name] mechanic shop. It will be the best $200 bucks you spend on the car!

Right, so now let’s jump right into it.

List of Potential Issues
Exterior aluminium spaceframe, aluminium panels, so no rust issues. But aluminum is much harder and expensive to fix so make sure there aren’t any major hits or dents

The Rear View Mirrors can eventually leak and ruin the switch panel beneath them so I replaced mine before it became an issue.

Gas tank overflow Clogged Canister The evaporator on the tank sometimes can get clogged and won’t allow the tank to fill up properly

Clutches Replacing a clutch can be quite expensive. Have a dealer check the clutch as the computer can check for slippage. 04 models suffered from issues relating to the clutch and the eGear system. Make sure that the software was updated. A new kit is typically $3000 on its own.

eGear system Hydraulic lines can pop depending on age and condition. Fortunately for us, you can now buy aftermarket lines at a reduced cost. A set of egear lines can cost around $500 plus labor if you don’t do it yourself. If your problem is with the actuator, that is a much more costly repair. The actuator alone can cost upwards of $5,000. These issues are more common with the early cars, but a way to avoid having egear issues is to go with the manual 6speed!

Power steering rack & pinion lines According to Lamborghini, high pressure hoses for the hydraulicallyassisted power steering system may leak in certain driving situations. Should this occur, a fire could result if the fluid comes into contact with an ignition source.

Starter motor When you first start the car, listen closely to the starter motor and ensure that it disengages and stops spinning quickly. If it lingers, that means your starter is about to die and will need replacing.

Engine knocking Gallardos are known for burning a lot of oil and if the previous owner did not keep up with it, engine damage could be present. You have to remember that these cars are made by a small group of engineers with small budgets and performance in mind. These engines have very low tolerance for neglect.

Oil pump drive shaft assembly Some owners report having issues with early models where the engine either hesitates or comes to a complete stop due to failure of this shaft. Once replaced, the car will operate as normal.

Aftermarket wheels / Possible Differential Damage Pay close attention to a car with aftermarket wheels. Oversized or different sized tires front to rear can damage the differential. If the car you’re interested in buying has aftermarket wheels, be sure to have the differentials checked during the PPI as this can cost several thousands of dollars to repair or replace depending on the model and trim you have.

Overfilling the dry sump tank Early models also had issues with owners overfilling the dry sump tank. This would cause the engine to smoke and at times could make the car develop driving issues.

Rear main seals The rear main seals are prone to leaking.
