Johnny Depp has embodied some of the most iconic characters in movie history, so it doesn’t come as a surprise to know that he has been through the wringer, doing some pretty extreme things on set and for his characters.
Playing Edward Scissorhands solidified Depp as an icon, but those scissor hands? Well, they weren’t always fun to deal with, but that didn’t stop Depp from wearing them around his house to see what it was really like for his character. Playing Captain Jack Sparrow made some pretty wild days including one that saw Depp steering a giant ship, having gold teeth implanted in his mouth, AND sweating his brains out in a sauna until his mind started messing with him.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a trip of a movie, so you know the prep process was equally intense. Johnny Depp actually spent 4 months living in Hunter S. Thompson's basement and living his lifestyle which included one wildly dangerous stunt involving a propane tank in the early hours of the morning.
In both The Lone Ranger and Sleepy Hollow, Depp spent some time with horses well, being dragged by them at least. That said, it was planned for Sleepy Hollow but for Lone Ranger? That was a complete accident. On set for Public Enemies, Depp put himself in the direct line of risk when he leaped in front of a moving car to save multiple extras from being seriously injured!
It was never easy, but Depp’s commitment to the work never wavered even if it wasn’t so safe for him!
