In this first part of a FIVE part detail oriented video series we do a complete step by step GM service manual rebuild of the venerable GM 4L80E automatic transmission (RPO code MT1). We will be using ONLY the genuine GM factory service information for the step by step procedures involved, only genuine GM OEM parts, and referencing any special tools required along the way. The GM information utilized will include the GM TURM (Transmission Unit Repair Manual) in hard copy printed book form, as well as the online GM SI (Service Information) for any service bulletin errata at www.acdelcotds.com. Many folks find transmission repair a very intimidating project to take on, but with the right information and tools (and sufficient skill and experience) it's really very straight forward to DIY with the help of this video.
The particular 4L80E being illustrated in this video is a 1999 model. If your 4L80E transmission is older, or newer, than this model year you will note some differences along the way. This video illustrating the 1999 4L80E will be most similar for 1997 and up 4L80E transmissions.
