1977: JOHN NOAKES scaling Nelson's Column is TERRIFYING | Blue Peter | Classic clips | BBC Archive

Beloved British children's television presenter John Noakes scales the iconic statue in Trafalgar Square for Blue Peter. That's a hairraising climb of almost 170 feet on a wobbly ladder, with no safety harness, and no helmet, wearing rather wide bottomed flares all in order to see how they clean out the pigeon poo that accumulates in the statue.

Credit is also due to the extraordinarily brave cameraman Terry, and the team of steeplejacks who kept them both safe up there.

They did things differently in the 1970s.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME or on Nelson's Column, for that matter... just don't try this anywhere, ever!

Originally broadcast 30 May 1977.

Blue Peter is still going strong, with new editions of the show broadcast live on CBBC and BBC iPlayer every Friday at 5pm: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...
