Here I showcase a key item that John Cashman always would preach during his years of providing services to 60s Lincoln Continental owners specially 1964/1965 Lincoln Continental owners in this example.

“The reinforcing bar is a MUST install on every 64–65 Lincoln convertible. I’ve been installing them for the past 38 years to correct the engineering defect. Many cars I work on have NOT had this engineering defect corrected and the castiron bracket is broken and the rams are bent...By 66 they had it fixed. You can use either quarter inch square tubing or halfinch pipe from Lowes or Home Depot. Retract the top and have it in the trunk. Just before the top lands in the trunk have an assistant lift back on it so it has no tension on the rams and the brackets. Cut it approximately 31 1/2 inches long and install over the upper knob of the pivot bracket.(which is attached to the hydraulic ram). Measure carefully using an assistant. The pipe or tube must be installed tightly so it can't escape over the top of the knob. ( large rivet ) This keeps the pivot brackets for migrating inward and breaking the bottom castiron bracket.if it is installed correctly and painted black you can never tell it wasn't factory installed…. I’ve installed hundreds!” John Cashman
