Thursday May 1st 1952 was Edward Bircher’s birthday. When Bircher, a wellknown Wichita building contactor, stepped onto the porch of his home on the east side of the city that evening, he was struck my a sudden, but already familiar, overpowering odour. For several days now the stench had seemed to emanate from the crawlspace beneath the home in what was described in 1952 as an exclusive Wichita neighbourhood. Thinking he had pondered the issue for long enough, Edward Bircher alerted the police. This is the story of the Wichita Duffelbag Murder.
