It was the local version of "American Idol" in 1940. Young women were nominated and voted for based on coupons redeemed from the Record Eagle newspaper. In addition, the story line of the film concerned a Hollywood director coming to Traverse City to be the judge in a contest. The winner of the local contest was to have a role in the film, as would most of the other nominees. The intention was to create excitement for the film.
