You need to know about this! Over the last few weeks, we’ve found some exciting new developments and program changes. In this video, we’re going to review 13 things you need to know.

I’m Nicole from Low Income Relief, where we help millions of people save money and get free stuff.

Here are some recent developments that you should know about.

Low Income Internet Update

Comcast is increasing speeds for their low income internet program. Effective March 1st, Comcast will be rolling out higher speeds for their Internet Essentials program! New and existing customers will receive download speeds of 50 Mbps and upload speeds of 5 Mbps for the usual price of $9.95 per month.

This change was implemented to support remote online learning in low income households across the US.

In addition, satellite internet service provider Starlink intends to join the Lifeline internet subsidy program for low income users. There is no expected date for this, because Starlink Services still needs to be designated as an ETC before it can participate. However, SpaceX said it “will provide Lifeline to qualifying low income consumers.”

Taxes

The IRS is now prepared to accept tax returns, so it’s a great time to file your paperwork if you haven’t received your stimulus payments yet. If you haven’t received your payments, be sure to check out our previous video about how to get them. In some cases, you may have to contact the IRS directly… but in most cases, simply filing your taxes should do the trick.

While you’re filing your taxes, remember to file for the Earned Income Tax Credit if you have children! The IRS has estimated that 20% of the people who are eligible for this credit do not claim it, but Action News Now reports that the average $2,297 to your tax refund.

Please remember that you do not need to pay to file your taxes. There are many free filing programs for low income people. You can find a list at LowIncomeRelief.com.

There are many statespecific updates as well. We’ll move alphabetically through the states in this section:

Alabama residents served by the Community Action Agency of Northeast Alabama can now begin applying for LIHEAP! Funds were finally made available in early February, so clients who earn 150% of the poverty guidelines or less can receive up to $1,000 toward thei utilities.

Alaska residents in Juneau may soon receive assistance, thanks to a 72 vote by the Juneau Assembly in February. They have authorized a new round of assistance for the lowest income residents who sought assistance last year.

California has not invited community health clinics to enroll as coronavirus vaccine providers, which means that low income communities are underserved. If you need a vaccine in California, make sure you’re looking at locations outside of your usual community health clinics.

Residents of San Francisco may be able to participate in the Right to Recover Fund if they miss work because they are diagnosed with coronavirus. This program provides a debit card with $1,285, which is about two weeks of minimum wage earnings, to those who cannot work because they are sick. The program has repeatedly run out of funds but was just infused with an additional $6 million in funds on February 11th and began accepting new referrals immediately.

In addition, low income residents of Marin County, California, may be able to get free internet soon! Free Neighborhood WiFi is coming to Marin County, with the goal of providing free internet to nearly 300 low income families over the next two years.
